ABAP stood originally for "Allgemeiner Berichtsanalyseprozessor". Then, when the company turned international, they created an English "backronym" for ABAP - Advanced Business Application Programming, as we know it. So far, so good, this is not uncommon.
The funny thing is that the original German name translates to "Common Report Analysis Processor".
So, why didn't they just use the acronym for that to name their programming language?
